We have recently updated the People Manager Toolkit to equip managers with the knowledge and guidance they need to ensure their disabled team members feel valued and give their best at work. It has been fully updated and remodelled, now featuring 6 guides and 16 practical resources. If you’re already familiar with the Toolkit, you’ll find updated content in a new format that’s easier to navigate.

There are several factors to consider to adequately manage disabled employees, but it doesn’t have to be a daunting task. The People Manager Toolkit splits the key areas in 6 guides you can read together or separately:

  1. The basics
  2. Workplace adjustments
  3. Remote and hybrid working
  4. Performance management
  5. Attendance
  6. Grievance and disciplinary

These guides include essential information on the complying with the law (including reasonable adjustments, the role of Occupational Health and managing absences), and also offer advice on creating a supportive environment for your disabled employees: how to have sensitive conversations, how to deal with the fear of stigma, and much more.

Alongside each guide are practical resources. Based on the questions we’ve received from managers in our member organisations, they explore the specific situations you’re most likely to encounter and demonstrate how to solve common problems. They are shareable, so you can disseminate them amongst your teams or send them to other managers. They include:

  • “I don’t think I have any disabled people working for me”
  • Types of adjustments and adjustment processes
  • Supporting remote workers’ physical and mental health
  • When absences can mean an employee needs support

The wellbeing and development of employees who are disabled, have become disabled, or have a long-term condition is essential to creating an open culture where all can thrive. If a disabled person has just joined your team, or if you think an existing employee might require support, the People Manager Toolkit will show you the steps to take and will help you maximise the talent within your teams.

The People Manager Toolkit is available to BDF Members and Partners only. Speak to your Disability Business Partner for more information.
