You cannot underestimate the power of positive portrayal. Seeing a range of beautifully diverse disabilities, authentically represented across our media, is not just urgent and necessary, it also helps to celebrate disability and shine a spotlight on the disabled joy that people can experience in their daily lives.

Just because my disability is less-visible, it doesn’t mean that it has less of an impact on my life. We need to change how disability is viewed and that’s why I am supporting Business Disability Forum’s ‘Changing the image of disability’ campaign. I hope it will encourage more people to look beyond the obvious and the stereotypes, and to see that disability is something that can affect anyone.

Disabled people are highly marginalised in society and via purposeful, powerful imagery reflecting our true diverse nature, perception, stereotypes and attitudes surrounding disability can be positively changed, to create a new world for us.

The images we see of disability influence what and how we think about disability. How can organisations and businesses be inclusive, representative and reach out to all people, including disabled people? One way is to utilise the Changing the image of disability resources from Business Disability Forum.

Sinéad Burke

For too long, images of Disabled people have been clinical, and without reflection of community or disability pride. Stock imagery can reiterate exclusionary narratives, making Disabled people objects rather than subjects or protagonists. Visibility alone cannot be a metric for systemic change, but this campaign and its library of images for businesses and media is a key milestone.
