Mental wellness framework
This case study comes from Anglo American’s submission to our 2021 Disability Smart Awards.
You can download a slide explaining Anglo American’s ‘Mental Wellness Framework.’ This is an example of how Anglo American has embedded awareness and support for mental health across all areas of their organisation and operations.
Innovation
In our business, issues around physical and psychological safety must always be a focus. This means we are driven to find innovative ways of delivering mental wellness interventions that will make a real difference and set an industry-standard.
Our approach involves how we work, and where we work.
As part of our strategy to build the truly inclusive environment we are aiming for, we’ve integrated our global mental wellness framework across everything we do at Anglo American, reaching scale that’s sector-leading for our industry. As part of our approach, we:
- train 5% of all employees to become accredited Mental Health First Aiders,
- offer a comprehensive package of support including an EAP, e-learning modules, medical insurance, Headspace access and line manager and HR training,
- raise awareness through regular events, campaigns, and discussion spaces,
- increased support for colleagues in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including dedicated mental wellness support such as increasing the number of emergency days and family care provision,
- use our Enabling You ERG and their senior leader sponsor to promote the importance of mental wellness in the business and break down barriers of stigma in this area,
- monitor progress through our mental health dashboard and employee engagement surveys.
Psychological safety
Providing a psychologically safe environment where everybody can thrive is at the centre of our ‘Stand Up for Everyone’ campaigns which tackle bullying, harassment, sexual harassment and victimisation and domestic violence. By partnering with external experts and organisations, we have developed zero-tolerance policies and delivered training for every colleague to build awareness and provide support to eliminate behaviours that we know exclude colleagues and prevent them from reaching their full potential.
Training
In our bespoke mental health training modules for line managers and all colleagues we use case studies to help people recognise poor mental health in operational environments (where there are significant safety issues) and corporate environments. Training and channels for reporting and accessing support are made accessible to all colleagues using on-line platforms, apps and face to face materials.
Physical space matters
We also know that safety, including positive mental health, relies on where we work as well as inclusive programmes and policies. Physical space matters. This is why we ensure all our sites are welcoming, supportive, and accessible for everyone by design. For example, we worked closely with the CAE and our colleague networks to ensure the refurbishment of our London HQ met and exceeded all requirements for being accessible to all, including:
- accessible cycling facilities, bathrooms, step-free access, and state-of-the-art accessible accommodation onsite,
- hearing loop technology and braille signs throughout,
- spaces for privacy, peace and reflection,
- free-to-use gym, wellness studios, parent and child rooms, and cafeteria,
- wellbeing services that provide workstation assessments, post-incident support and medicals.
According to our 2021 global pulse survey, 86% of colleagues are aware of our wellbeing resources 79% feel we care about their physical and mental wellbeing. These positive results will only fuel our commitment to building a more inclusive workplace as we look to launch our global disability strategy in early 2022.
