We are delighted to announce that Hammersmith & Fulham Civic Campus, designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, is a finalist in the New London Architecture’s (NLA) New London Awards.

The extension and full refurbishment of the Grade II listed Hammersmith Town Hall, with the creation of a new high-quality civic mixed-use development, is a joint venture between Hammersmith & Fulham Council and commercial partners, A2Dominion.

In association with the Mayor of London, the awards celebrate projects that create a sustainable, civilised and egalitarian city. We are proud that the project has been shortlisted in the Mixing category, which recognises schemes of work-live-play that are designed holistically to meet the needs of different communities and their activities.

The NLA awards shortlisting automatically enters the project into the People’s Choice Award where the public can vote now on their favourite project. The winner will be announced in November.

Hammersmith & Fulham Civic Campus makes way for a vibrant new piece of town centre with greatly improved and fully accessible facilities for residents and workers. 52% of the housing will be shared ownership and social housing for local people. All the architecture and materials will be the same quality regardless of tenure.

Central to the scheme is a new public piazza, set in an attractive and extensive public realm. This public space will have play spaces, hard and soft landscaping throughout; and will see the return of a community cinema. The four new buildings surrounding the town hall will offer active frontages for retail, café and restaurant use; commercial and affordable office space, a new site-wide energy centre and 204 residential dwellings.

The refurbishment and extension of the Town Hall secures the building’s future as the civic heart of Hammersmith & Fulham. It is a confident intervention that respects the host building and completes its architectural expression with improved connectivity to the River Thames.

Mark Rintoul, Associate and project architect at Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners said: “The shortlist nomination is a great recognition at this early stage of the project, and RSHP are delighted that NLA have acknowledged its great potential. As the project architect I am immensely privileged to lead a pioneering collaboration with multiple stakeholders, local amenity groups and the Disabled Residents Team who have defined this truly community-led development.”

Danny Lynch, Director of Land and Development, A2Dominion said: “We’re delighted that the New London Awards have recognised this excellent development that delivers affordable housing and a number of desirable facilities for the people of Hammersmith. It’s also important we highlight the crucial work done in partnership with disability and environmental groups to make this scheme accessible and eco-friendly.”

The campus is set for completion in April 2023, with demolition in progress and preparation for construction (RIBA stage 5), starting at the end of September 2020.
