Creating an inclusive deaf student experience: from open day through to graduation
We will look at the barriers and challenges faced by deaf individuals in all levels of education, through real examples. We will discuss the isolation faced by many deaf students, and how this will be different from other students.
We shall also explore how we can better support and remove barriers for our deaf colleagues in the workplace, helping everyone to belong.
The session will cover:
- How to create an accessible welcome through the open day.
- Expertly understanding and assessing the needs of a deaf student.
- Crafting a memorable first day experience.
- Creating inclusive touchpoints.
- Providing user-friendly information, advice and guidance.
- Identifying the challenges in the deaf student experience.
- Innovative design for excellence.
- Accessible information: plain English, captioning and signed translation.
Attendees will leave this session with a clear understanding of a deaf student’s experience at University and have actionable steps on how to enhance it. These insights will also support you to understand the challenges faced by deaf colleagues and enable you to make changes that work for everyone.
