Our 2018 Film Festival 7 day challenge winners!

Winners at Business Disability Forum Film Festival 2018

Earlier this year we set students and graduates with a challenge to make a film in 7 days. We asked them to create a video themed around "going places", in terms of career progression and accessibility, highlighting their experiences and any barriers they have faced when applying for jobs and looking to progress from education to work.

The best of these short films took centre stage at our Business Disability Forum Film Festival on Wednesday 20 June 2018 where we announced our first, second and third place winners.

Here are our winners!

1st place - winners

Film: Kenny Rei and the Spicy Ladies
Group: Diversity vs Adversity
Students: Bettina Toth and Miguel Ramos
University: The Manchester Film School/Manchester Metropolitan University
Course: BA (Hons) Film and TV Production
What made you decide to enter the film challenge?
Miguel says: I am always looking for new exciting opportunities to develop my working skills. I knew immediately I had to give it a go. Plus, the social theme was another big incentive. My mother suffers from Polio and I’ve always been very sensitized with the difficulties people like her have to face in their daily basis routines.
What was your inspiration behind the film?
Bettina says: Our film depicts life with ADHD and I personally know and have worked with young people who were diagnosed with hyperactivity. I wanted to show that even though they have difficulties with certain tasks, they are able to perform and even outperform their colleagues.

2nd place

Film: Barrier
Group: Wolf Pack
Students: Samuel Ash and William Horsefield (last year’s winners!).
University: University of Wolverhampton.
Course: Film & TV Production/Video and Film Production.
What made you decide to enter the film challenge?
Samuel says: “This festival gives an opportunity for us, students with disabilities, to be involved and it encouraged us to create a film about our experience and how our film can assist to improve access and awareness of Deaf people.”
What was your inspiration behind the film?
William says: “My inspiration was coming from some images from Google showing the art of depression monsters who follow humans and some of Deaf people’s experience in the workplace inspired me as well. We also wanted to create a positive attitude by adding humour.”

3rd place

Film: Mike
Student: Edgar Scukins.
University: Manchester Metropolitan University.
Course: Filmmaking.
What made you decide to enter the film challenge?
One of the main reasons was to share Mike's story. I am helping him out with mobility scooter repairs. I thought that it would be useful to show people how many things one can achieve, even when diagnosed with cerebral palsy.
What was your inspiration behind the film?
Mike inspires me everyday. He is always smiling and I have never seen him sad. When I am struggling with something and begin to complain, I feel slightly ashamed, because I remember Mike immediately.

Highly commended films:
