Richard Pereira

Deputy Director, Population Statistics, ONS

Rich leads population statistics and demography in the Office for National Statistics.  This includes the official population estimates, projections and demographic analysis.  In this role he has established a comprehensive programme of work on the impact of ageing, and established the UN Titchfield City Group on Ageing to lead international work in this area. 

Over his career he has also led regional and local statistics, led a large scale programme of improvement to migration statistics, and was director of the 2001 Census Coverage Survey – at the time the largest social survey to have been conducted in the UK (after the Census itself).

He has a background in agricultural statistics, including both data collection methods and analysis and dissemination.  He developed a number of innovative surveys for DEFRA, as well as once compiling the agricultural accounts for the UK.
