Mona Patel

Equality and Diversity Specialist at Manchester Metropolitan University

Mona is integral in delivering Manchester Met University’s Equality and Diversity (E&D) Strategic objectives. She undertakes policy development, equality analyses, consultation exercises, and provides expert advice to staff; mainstreaming E&D into practices that affect stakeholders.

Mona developed a comprehensive suite of on-line guidance to support the recruitment of disabled candidates right the way through their employee lifecycle. She delivers staff training aligned to these guides making disability equality the norm.

Mona leads on continuous improvement initiatives such as the Disability Confident Employer Scheme and the BDF’s Disability Standard. In 2017, Man Met became the first university to attain the Gold Disability Standard award. As one of just five organisations to achieve this, Mona now supports other HEIs with their submissions. Her dedication to inclusivity, led to the establishment of the E&D Champions Network consisting of 37 staff spread across all academic and professional areas within the university. As a founder member of the National Association of Disabled Staff Networks (NADSN), Mona helps to connect disabled staff networks with each other to share best practice nationally.

Personal life
Mona has a rare muscle disease - GNE myopathy that began to affect her in early adulthood. She is committed to increasing awareness of the condition and helping patients and caregivers in Europe feel supported through their journey. She is now a volunteer Certified GNEM Patient Advocate for the Neuromuscular Disease Foundation.

Mona is committed to making a difference to the experience and performance of disabled people regionally and nationally.
