Disability, identity and technology: A journey through time

Disability, identity and technology journey through time

Hosted by PwC

This year's annual technology showcase will be looking at our themes of Identity and Going places through the lens of technology.

We will hear about the lived experience of individuals from within business and discussing where technology has really made an impact and where it still has some way to go.

We will discuss career progression and travel for people with disabilities, along with how these individuals feel their disability has impacted their identity and choices.

This will be supported by an exhibition area where you can find out about new and emerging technologies to support your business in becoming Disability-Smart.

Our first speaker will be Paul Smyth, Head of Digital Accessibility at Barclays who will provide a personal perspective of working with a disability and turning heads.

Paul will share his own journey of disability and getting into an on in his career at Barclays as a visually impaired accessibility leader and disability champion. Be prepared for stories of turning heads and taking the long way around in getting a job, forging a career and leveraging whizzy technology and applying a resilient mind-set.

We are also delighted to welcome James Hallam, Senior Manager in the London Top Tier Controls team at PwC.

James will be sharing his personal story of how he uses tools and technology to enable him to get to work and do his job. He also talks about how this changes over time. This leads to constant interesting challenges and opportunities, sometimes via unusual routes!

Finally, we will be welcoming Elisabeth Ward, Content Designer at Scope.

Elisabeth will be talking about how attitudes to disability influenced the way she viewed herself and shaped her identity growing up, and how this impacted her in her career. She will also share her journey with equipment and reasonable adjustments at work, as well as the challenges she’s faced with specialist technology.

We will also welcome a number of organisations to showcase new and innovative technology which will help make your business disability-smart! Whether it is day to day, events or in your personal life, these companies will have something for you.
