Building an inclusive workplace for employees with autism

This workshop offers guidance on how to systematically and strategically embed inclusion into the workplace environment for employees with autism spectrum conditions.

Business Disability Forum’s 2016 report ‘Square holes for square pegs: current practice in employment and autism’, draws attention to the need for autism awareness based on an understanding of removing barriers for individuals with autism. The sensory environment, workplace structures and communication in modern working places can present barriers for employees with autism, making it difficult for them to fit in. When it is estimated that only around 15% of adults diagnosed with autism are in full-time employment[1], it is clear that employers need to do more to create working cultures that are accepting of difference.

Making adjustments and removing barriers for employees with autism is not just a question of avoiding legal and reputational risk; when employees feel comfortable and are able to be themselves in their working environment they are in turn more productive and effective workers. Increased job satisfaction leads to better employee retention, and enables people to progress within their organisations and careers.

Led by Daniel Wiles, author of the ‘Square holes’ report, this course builds on the research and findings of the report to offer a model by which you can imbed autism awareness into your organisations. We will look at how to manage expectations for teams and individuals, low-cost, practical solutions to removing barriers and training that you may wish to provide for your line managers.

Learning objective

In this course, delegates will:

  • Acquire an understanding of the impact of autism in the workplace.
  • Gain knowledge of the environmental, structural and communicative barriers employees with autism might face in the workplace.
  • Discover a range of take-away tools and guidance that can be used to reduce and eliminate barriers.
  • Learn how to build confidence in reasonable adjustments and employee relations cases.

Diversity and inclusions professionals, employee relations managers, HR advisors, equality managers and anyone responsible for overseeing the design and implementation of the organisation-wide workplace adjustments process.
