Online Construction Network – Construction during Covid and post-BrexitShare via facebook Share via twitter Share via linkedin Share via email
63 per cent of the UK’s construction materials are imported from the EU, and 40 per cent of London’s construction workers are not from the UK.
The construction sector is currently experiencing the ‘double whammy’ impact of both Brexit and the Covid pandemic. Most days there is more news of how Brexit has or is yet to bring skills and materials shortages to the construction sector. This comes at the same time as many construction projects have been paused due to the pandemic. This difficult landscape raises some questions:
- Is media reporting of the sector fair and representative of current challenges for the sector, or does it undermine and give a disservice to construction businesses who have proved resilient and are thriving?
- What plans are there in the sector to ride the future changes to workforce and resourcing that is brought by both Brexit and the pandemic?
- How can these times be an opportunity to design disability inclusion into the resilience business and workforce planning?
These are some of the questions that this confidential, peer support meeting will address. Come along to hear from our Head of Policy and Research (Angela Matthews), our construction Business Partner (Karan Snuggs), and to hear the challenges and solutions being tackled by BDF members in the construction sector.
