[{"id":24180,"date":"2026-07-08T12:28:03","date_gmt":"2026-07-08T11:28:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businessdisabilityforum.org.uk\/?p=24180"},"modified":"2026-07-08T14:37:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T13:37:17","slug":"bdf-conference-unites-global-voices-to-lead-change-on-disability-inclusion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businessdisabilityforum.org.uk\/bdf-conference-unites-global-voices-to-lead-change-on-disability-inclusion\/","title":{"rendered":"BDF conference unites global voices to lead change on disability inclusion"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Business Disability Forum\u2019s global conference brought together business leaders and top employers to debate how global change can be used to deliver global disability inclusion (7 July).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Addressing the <a href=\"https:\/\/businessdisabilityforum.org.uk\/event\/global-conference-2026\/\">\u201cDelivering disability-inclusive change in global organisations\u201d<\/a> conference, Diane Lightfoot, CEO of Business Disability Forum (BDF) said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGlobal disability inclusion brings significant benefits for disabled people, society and business. Leading and achieving positive organisational transformation when external change is happening at such pace and with such momentum, however, is a significant challenge. How do we cut through the noise and confusion around us? And how do we turn current challenges into opportunities to achieve meaningful and lasting change for our disabled employees and customers?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI believe that the starting point must be equipping ourselves and our staff. Being able to cope with and navigate not just uncertain but chaotic times is increasingly becoming a key skill for all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lyn Lee,&nbsp;DEI strategist and author of&nbsp;Tiny Rice Grains, a&nbsp;Straits Times&nbsp;non-fiction bestseller,&nbsp;said:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvery small action and working together can lead to effective change. This means that true global leadership&nbsp;isn&#8217;t&nbsp;about where you sit or the influence you hold.&nbsp;It&#8217;s&nbsp;about recognising that every person, in every role and every corner of the world, has the power to make inclusion a daily practice. Like tiny rice grains, our individual actions may seem small but, together, they create the lasting culture change that makes disability inclusion possible.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Global impact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a panel discussion on the global impact that disability inclusion is having around the world, Max Simpson, CEO of&nbsp;Steps&nbsp;Social Enterprise in Thailand,&nbsp;said:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe see companies take a very compliance-based approach and stop with hiring the required quota of 1:100 employees.&nbsp;Then, challenges come up, like they&nbsp;can\u2019t&nbsp;retain&nbsp;just one employee who uses sign language, or someone&nbsp;who&nbsp;is&nbsp;actually under-employed because they&nbsp;didn\u2019t&nbsp;take a strengths-based approach to match them to&nbsp;a&nbsp;suitable role. We see inclusion work when companies take a strategic approach by looking&nbsp;at policy,&nbsp;practice&nbsp;and culture, and start to implement&nbsp;it&nbsp;through&nbsp;a pilot site or programme, like an internship cohort, to create a sense of success and community for everyone.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Murteza Rafi Khan, CEO of the Bangladesh Business &amp; Disability Network,&nbsp;said:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDisability inclusion is gaining momentum in Bangladesh. Responsible businesses are strengthening internal disability confidence, while also investing in external initiatives that address the needs of persons with disabilities. The global supply chains of multinational brands continue to influence greater local adoption of&nbsp;inclusive practices, while industry associations are coming forward to motivate their members to&nbsp;take action. Against the backdrop of economic headwinds and contracting foreign&nbsp;assistance&nbsp;that has often supported inclusion initiatives, the need and opportunity for responsible businesses to take a leadership role in advancing the disability inclusion agenda, in collaboration with key stakeholders, has never been greater.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conference&nbsp;was&nbsp;sponsored by HSBC. Carolanne&nbsp;Minashi, Global Head of Inclusion at HSBC,&nbsp;said:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Advancing disability inclusion matters globally because it helps remove\u202fbarriers to opportunity and enables people to&nbsp;participate&nbsp;fully in work and society.\u202fWe can\u202fall achieve this at scale by embedding inclusive design and accessible technology, strengthening policies and leadership accountability, and listening to lived experience to its name as hundreds of delegates from nearly 40 countries gathered to share ideas, learn from one another and explore how organisations can continue making progress on disability inclusion in an increasingly challenging environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Opening the conference, Diane Lightfoot, BDF\u2019s CEO, highlighted the clear benefits that disability inclusion brings for disabled people, society and organisations alike. She also reflected on the significance of seeing so many countries represented at the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shared commitment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt demonstrates a shared commitment to making workplaces and services more accessible and inclusive,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That commitment is more important than ever. Recent feedback from BDF Members and Partners shows many organisations are facing significant challenges. Around 30% of Members and 38% of Partners said that the negative global narrative around inclusion had affected their work over the past year. At the same time, 13% of Members and 24% of Partners reported that diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) had been deprioritised, while others pointed to reduced resources as a barrier to progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAgainst this backdrop, a key question emerges: how do we continue driving meaningful change when uncertainty and disruption seem to be constant features of working life?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Diane and our second keynote speaker, Lyn Lee, DEI strategist and author of &#8216;Tiny Rice Grains&#8217;, a Straits Times non-fiction bestseller, agreed that the answer begins with people. In a rapidly changing world, organisations must equip employees with the skills and support they need to adapt and thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Lyn said: \u201cIt can feel overwhelming, particularly in the current climate, to see how we can each make a difference. But it is vital to focus and not try to do everything at once. Every small action and working together can lead to effective change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Small steps equate to meaningful impact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That theme of small steps creating meaningful impact ran throughout the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Artificial intelligence is a prime example of how employers and employees need to adapt to a changing work environment. While there are understandable concerns about the impact of AI on jobs, it is also creating demand for new capabilities. Human-centred skills, such as collaboration, communication and bringing teams together around a shared purpose, are becoming increasingly valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another recurring theme was the idea of progress over perfection. Delegates heard repeatedly that organisations do not need to have all the answers before they take action. What matters is maintaining momentum and learning along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strong leadership also emerged as a critical ingredient for success. Lyn spoke passionately about the influence leaders can have in driving inclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe assume that leaders have all the answers but we are all learning together. (I have seen) many times senior leaders who are champions end up being inspired, they learn a lot about themselves and what they can do more visibly and how they can support the inclusion journey with their voice and influence. That\u2019s the one trick that organisations should not miss.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The importance of global champions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That sentiment was underpinned by global research undertaken by BDF a few years ago, which found that 91 per cent of respondents believed that a global champion was vital. Leaders who have the power and authority in organisations should take up that mantle and be that person who can help others be seen, heard, respected and valued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s what leadership is all about. We know the smallest of actions can help. Leadership is an action for all of us, no matter where we sit in the organisation or the world,\u201d emphasised Lyn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was also plenty of reason for optimism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Colleagues from Bangladesh, Thailand and Poland shared how disability networks are growing and helping to build more inclusive workplaces in their countries. Encouragingly, membership numbers continue to rise, and disability inclusion is becoming increasingly embedded within many larger organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also heard inspiring stories of progress from organisations including Coca-Cola Europacific Partners and L\u2019Or\u00e9al. Delegates shared practical examples of how accessibility matrixes, inclusion awards and other initiatives are helping to turn good intentions into meaningful action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the day was that while disability inclusion may be a global ambition, real change happens locally. Global strategies are important, but they only succeed when people on the ground take ownership and bring them to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By working together across countries, sectors and cultures, organisations can continue creating lasting change and building workplaces where disabled people can succeed, regardless of the challenges ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p That\u2019s a huge part of the population. Yet many services are still designed around a narrow idea of what &#8216;typical&#8217; users look like and miss the fact that disabled people have different needs and thus different barriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Service teams often design around a narrow picture of disability, then miss the wider range of needs that appear in real journeys. Whether it\u2019s issues with mobility and vision, memory, fatigue, hearing, speech or neurodiversity, too often accessibility is an after-thought. It becomes a tick box exercise rather than something embedded into design from day one. But, as Diane said, that approach misses the bigger issue. Inclusion isn\u2019t separate from the product or service \u2013 it is the product or And any process that assumes all customers can see, hear, remember codes, use biometrics, and complete everything in one go is simply going to exclude so many people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using preference data correctly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Diane quoted the results of <a href=\"https:\/\/businessdisabilityforum.org.uk\/resource\/banking-and-insurance-what-disabled-consumers-choose-to-buy-and-why\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/businessdisabilityforum.org.uk\/resource\/banking-and-insurance-what-disabled-consumers-choose-to-buy-and-why\/\">our research in banking and insurance<\/a>, which found that disabled consumers wanted accessible information, good service and communication shaped around the customer rather than the provider. One of the biggest frustrations for disabled customers is having to repeat their access needs every time they make contact. Businesses often collect preference data but do the frontline teams use that data in their support routes? And if not, why not? In the end, if the same customer has to keep explaining the same thing, over and over again, it creates frustration for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The value of lived experience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Accessibility often fails at the level of detail, not in a headline policy statement. It\u2019s about whether someone can actually use the service in real life. Are the instructions clear? Can they go back to prompts if they make a mistake? Can they pause and come back later? Does the language make sense?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many organisations are getting better at visual accessibility, screen reader compatibility, and dexterity-related issues, but still miss the demands placed on\u202fmemory, concentration, language processing, and decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately, trust comes down to honesty and human support. Customers would rather know upfront if something might not work for them. And when they do need help, simply asking \u201chow can I make this easier for you?\u201d can make all the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Customers value transparency. If a service doesn\u2019t work for them, they\u2019d rather know upfront. For regulated organisations, accessible by design isn\u2019t a side project. Disability inclusion should be owned by leaders across the business, and integrated into values, behaviours and everyday practices. With fewer than 10 employed staff and over 60 paid trainers, Happy Smiles uses their passion and agility to create a workplace rooted in trust, flexibility and lived experience, challenging traditional models that often harm disabled people\u2019s physical and mental wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This approach is echoed by finalists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evtec-group.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Evtec<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/tiltingthelens.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tilting the Lens<\/a>. Evtec rebuilt its business model to create a workplace that is inclusive by design, rethinking everything from recruitment to development, while Tilting the Lens centres lived experience, co-creating solutions with disabled people and embedding their insight directly into leadership decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These businesses are helping shift the narrative from inclusion as a responsibility to inclusion as a driver of performance and innovation, turning a personal barrier into a business opportunity. Report highlights impact of disability on opportunities for young people \u2013 BDF responds"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Business Disability Forum (BDF) has welcomed the Milburn Review interim report (28 May) and particularly its findings showing the impact of disability and long-term health conditions on young people looking to enter training and work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Figures in the report show that the number of young people, aged 16 to 24, not in education, employment or training (NEETs) has hit almost one million &#8211; the highest\u202flevel\u202fsince 2020. The report also shows the high instances of disability and long-term conditions, such as mental ill health, amongst this group of young people. Diane Lightfoot, CEO of BDF, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvery young person should have the opportunity to work if they can and want to. The education, welfare and health care systems have prevented young people &#8211; and particularly young disabled people and young people with long-term conditions &#8211; from being prepared for finding work or training, and from knowing the range of opportunities that may suit them. Equipping young people to work is not only an economic necessity, but it is also a moral imperative that the UK has to our young people. Equally, the jobs must be there for young people to take up.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are pleased to see this first Milburn Review report move beyond employability issues to consider both the labour market and employer demand as causes of the huge increase in young people not in education, employment or training. Looking into early experiences of young people as \u2018drivers\u2019 and root causes of unemployment is refreshing. Employment policy that recognises people\u2019s early life experiences as key determinants of future job opportunities are vital.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe report acknowledges that both lost confidence and lost opportunities are long running and structural issues. We welcome the recognition that young people themselves are not \u2018the problem\u2019 but that there are rising levels of distress, anxiety and ill health in this demographic.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cApprenticeships and Saturday jobs have largely disappeared. Employers in the report say that young people are overwhelmingly not ready for the workplace and aren\u2019t being prepared with the soft skills like communication, collaboration, agility and adaptability they need and this chimes with what we hear from our Members. Those aged 16 \u2013 24 have faced a combination of disruptive conditions: a pandemic during formative life stages, fluctuating education delivery, cost\u202fof\u202fliving pressures, housing insecurity, and an increasingly precarious job market.\u202fFor disabled young people\u202fand those with long-term conditions, these issues have been magnified.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe cannot afford to write off a whole generation of young people and nor should we. Systemic barriers need to be removed, and more tailored support needs to be available to meet the specific needs and experiences of this generation when it comes to accessing training and work.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div data-object_id=\"23634\" class=\"cbxwpbkmarkwrap cbxwpbkmarkwrap_guest cbxwpbkmarkwrap_no_cat cbxwpbkmarkwrap-post \"><a the Work and Pensions Committee today (21 May) calling for a two-week deadline for employers to respond to reasonable adjustment requests from disabled workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Diane Lightfoot, CEO of Business Disability Forum, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe timely provision of effective workplace adjustments is critical in enabling many disabled people to thrive at work. We support any measures that will help make sure disabled employees get the adjustments they need when they need them. There are many barriers in the adjustment process that need to be addressed to make this happens. Waiting time for an adjustment decision is one barrier, but we also need to address market and supply provision of technology, mobility aids and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe also support the recommendation that any decline of adjustments should be made in writing. Too often we see that decisions about adjustments that are requested are binary \u2013 a straight yes or no rather than a discussion about what else might be possible to remove the barrier the individual is experiencing if the original request isn\u2019t \u2018reasonable\u2019 or practical for the employer to provide. In line with this, we believe that all new employees in the workplace \u2013 not just those that the employer knows to be disabled &#8211; should have information about what adjustments are available Forum.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That question surfaced again and again on a sunny day in May 2025, when members of the Technology Taskforce gathered at NatWest to share what really mattered to them in digital accessibility. We had so many diverse perspectives in the room, with representatives from PwC, Google, BBC and Government Digital Services to name a few. We covered a vast range of topics, but one theme kept rising to the top: what are we measuring, why should we measure and what should we be measuring next?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone in the room agreed that digital accessibility is critical to business. But showing its value, proving progress, identifying gaps, and making the case for investment is much harder without meaningful data. As Jenny Lay-Flurrie, long-time friend of the Taskforce, often reminds us: \u201cIf you don\u2019t know how accessible it is, it probably isn\u2019t.\u201d In a world where data and AI are increasingly driving business processes and decisions, we need to ensure that digital accessibility data is included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, we\u2019ve begun capturing the metrics our organisations already use and exploring what else would help us understand accessibility in a more consistent, actionable way. To simplify and focus we grouped metrics into a framework that reflect the distinct parts of the accessibility journey with 3 pillars emerging: <strong>People, Process, Product<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">People Metrics: tracking employee engagement in digital accessibility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Measuring employee involvement in related activities \u2013 and the resulting level of knowledge and expertise \u2013 helps foster an inclusive culture focused solely on digital actions and progress, rather than disability disclosure or broader DE&amp;I data. The central focus of people metrics is on behaviours, ongoing learning and the development of a supportive community. These indicators reveal how aware staff members are of best practices and whether the organisation is building the capability and confidence necessary across teams to create accessible digital environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Examples of people metrics include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Number of unique visitors accessing the accessibility resource,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Percentage of employees who have completed accessibility training,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accessibility Champions successfully onboarded,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participation, engagement, and feedback from workshop attendees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Process Metrics: Embedding accessibility into organisational practices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knowing how integrated accessibility is within an organisation\u2019s operational workflows, governance structures and everyday working practices provides insight into whether accessibility is genuinely embedded into daily operations, extending from the initial design and development phases through to vendor management and testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monitoring process metrics reflects the organisation\u2019s maturity in integrating accessibility early in product planning, embedding it into development pipelines established within governance policies, preventing accessibility-related defects and ensuring suppliers are held accountable for meeting accessibility standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Examples of process metrics include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Integration of accessibility into design and planning steps,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Implementation of automated testing within development pipelines,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leakage of accessibility defects into releases,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maturity of supplier accessibility requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Product Metrics: Evaluating accessibility of digital outputs and user experiences<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oriented towards evaluating the accessibility of digital outputs and the actual outcomes users experience, product-focused metrics provide a clear indication of how accessible your digital products and services are to users and how they change over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is achieved through various indicators, ranging from established conformance testing and reporting approaches through to leveraging qualitative insights from users themselves. It\u2019s important that these metrics can be applied to a wide range of digital products, including websites, applications, digital content or PDFs, so that activities can be compared across products and teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Examples of product metrics include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Frequency and outcomes of accessibility conformance testing,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tracking and remediation of important accessibility defects,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maturity of disabled user research and feedback,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tracking and analysis of customer accessibility-related complaints.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where next?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was clear from the outset that while progress on digital accessibility can be tracked in many different ways within organisations, identifying common themes helps others to improve what activities they measure and how they do it. Our intention is to expand our People, Process, Product framework into a toolkit that organisations can use to understand what metrics others have found useful, gaps in areas they aren\u2019t measuring and how they could adapt them to suit their needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To aid this, we are interested in the metrics that you have found genuinely useful or would love to use. href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/broken-fit-note-system-to-be-overhauled\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fit Note plans announced today<\/a>, Angela Matthews, Director of Public Policy and Research at Business Disability Forum, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe current Fit Note system is not working for anyone. People using the system find it difficult to access and it places too much responsibility on time-poor GPs who cannot be expected to know someone\u2019s job or the workplace adjustments that they would need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEmployers tell us that recommendations about how to support someone coming back to work are either missing from Fit Notes or they are not detailed enough to be of use. This creates addition delays and frustrations for the person looking to return to work and their line manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe support plans to pilot a more flexible system with multiple routes in for individuals as well as more practical and tailored support for employees and their employers. We are also pleased to see that the Government is planning to consult with employers. This is vital if we want to make sure the new Fit Notes are fit for purpose and the process for delivering them is workable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are unsure about the practicalities of the three-way conversation between employee, employer and trained professional being proposed. We support this approach, but in our experience, this could be complicated to organise logistically and could make the return-to-work process longer. We will be feeding back on this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile we hope the reform of Fit Note system will make it easier for people to get back to work more quickly and with the support they need, these changes will have limited impact unless wider workplace inclusion issues are also addressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Government must reduce NHS waiting times, for example. Often Fit Notes have to be extended because people are still waiting for a diagnosis or to access the NHS treatment they need in order to be well enough to return to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe also need the Government to end the current uncertainty around the funding of workplace adjustments through Access to Work, recognising that people may need adjustments to make the return to work possible. The Government announced plans to address the Access to Work backlog earlier in the week, but employers and disabled people are still waiting to hear about additional funding for the scheme itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div data-object_id=\"23600\" class=\"cbxwpbkmarkwrap cbxwpbkmarkwrap_guest cbxwpbkmarkwrap_no_cat cbxwpbkmarkwrap-post \"><a additional staff to clear the Access to Work backlog announced today (19 May).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Angela Matthews, Director of Public Policy and Research at Business Disability Forum, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Access to Work scheme is a labour market inclusion lifeline, helping disabled people to enter and stay in work. For too long, the scheme has lacked the resource it needs to operate efficiently, and this has negatively impacted both disabled people and their employers. Whether waiting for adjustments for an interview or when already in work, timely provision of adjustments is everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLong waiting times for Access to Work has left some disabled people unable to take up job offers. For those in work, it has meant having to change or reduce their roles and has even forced some people to go off sick. Relationships between employee and employer have been made fractious and the skills and contributions that disabled people make to the workplace have been devalued. We are therefore really pleased to see more staff recruited to clear the backlog, but we do also want to see the Treasury invest in the scheme long-term so that this huge backlog does not happen Three words, which sum up well the&nbsp;feelings&nbsp;of those&nbsp;in the room at this&nbsp;year\u2019s Disability Smart Impact Awards&nbsp;ceremony, which took place on Wednesday&nbsp;(29 April)&nbsp;at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsbc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HSBC\u2019s<\/a> Global Headquarters in Canary Wharf<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having&nbsp;been involved in&nbsp;a number of&nbsp;award ceremonies over the years,&nbsp;it&nbsp;can be&nbsp;easy to&nbsp;see&nbsp;them&nbsp;as&nbsp;just&nbsp;part of&nbsp;BDF\u2019s \u2018business as usual\u2019&nbsp;and what we do as an organisation.&nbsp;But the stories that come out&nbsp;of&nbsp;the&nbsp;award&nbsp;ceremony&nbsp;each year,&nbsp;including this year\u2019s,&nbsp;are far from&nbsp;just&nbsp;ordinary.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The awards were an opportunity to hear&nbsp;about the amazing work being carried&nbsp;out&nbsp;by&nbsp;41&nbsp;individuals,&nbsp;teams&nbsp;and businesses small and large,&nbsp;from the UK and across the globe,&nbsp;to improve opportunities for disabled people in the workplace and the customer space.&nbsp;The projects&nbsp;ranged in size and budget,&nbsp;but all&nbsp;had&nbsp;several things in common.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Firstly,\u00a0a personal commitment\u00a0from\u00a0the finalists and winners\u00a0to make things\u00a0better\u00a0and\u00a0to\u00a0not accept\u00a0barriers.\u00a0As\u00a0Chris Lynch\u00a0from\u00a0Diverse Made Media,\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"\/awards\/disability-smart-impact-awards-2026\/award-winners\/technology-award-small-organisation-diverse-made-media\/\">winner of\u00a0the Disability Smart Impact Award for Technology\u00a0(small organisation)<\/a>, commented, \u201cthe barriers that we live with everyday often show us what needs to change.\u201d\u00a0Chris\u00a0has used the barriers he experienced to create\u00a0the world\u2019s first wheelchair camera system\u00a0so\u00a0disabled creatives can\u00a0independently\u00a0operate\u00a0the camera as filmmakers and broadcasters.\u00a0Sensory Shine, the\u00a0<a href=\"\/awards\/disability-smart-impact-awards-2026\/award-winners\/product-design-award-sensory-shine\/\">winners of\u00a0the Product Design Award<\/a>, told a similar story of\u00a0creating accessible oral care\u00a0products that have been\u00a0developed\u00a0from their own\u00a0personal experiences\u00a0of tackling\u00a0everyday barriers\u00a0around teeth brushing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Secondly,\u00a0an understanding that\u00a0accessibility\u00a0and inclusion\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0just improve things for disabled people,\u00a0they\u00a0make\u00a0things\u00a0better\u00a0for everyone, everywhere.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cWhen everyone\u00a0can\u00a0contribute, everyone\u00a0wins,\u00a0including our\u00a0audiences,\u201d\u00a0was a powerful\u00a0statement from\u00a0the BBC\u2019s Robbie Crow\u00a0about the impact that inclusive workplaces\u00a0have\u00a0beyond the workspace\u00a0in response to winning\u00a0<a href=\"\/awards\/disability-smart-impact-awards-2026\/award-winners\/recruitment-award-bbc\/\">this year\u2019s Inclusive Recruitment Award<\/a>. And\u00a0Marc Powell\u00a0from Unilever\u00a0added\u00a0that\u00a0\u201caccessibility is a massive lever for growth\u201d\u00a0when he collected the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/businessdisabilityforum.org.uk\/awards\/disability-smart-impact-awards-2026\/award-winners\/global-disability-inclusion-award-unilever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Disability Inclusion Award<\/a>.\u00a0Marc\u2019s\u00a0smart\u00a0glasses\u00a0accidentally\u00a0speaking to him\u00a0during his acceptance speech\u00a0to deliver\u00a0a message from his Mum,\u00a0just helped to emphasise\u00a0the \u2018everyone, everywhere\u2019 message.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thirdly,\u00a0recognition that to achieve change we need to keep\u00a0working and then work some more.\u00a0We heard from\u00a0<a href=\"\/awards\/disability-smart-impact-awards-2026\/award-winners\/leader-award-iain-wilkie-founder-and-chair-50-million-voices\/\">Iain Wilkie<\/a>\u00a0about\u00a0a long career, which has taken him from EY\u00a0to become the\u00a0Founder\u00a0and\u00a0Chair of\u00a050\u00a0Million\u00a0Voices, a global organisation\u00a0which\u00a0is transforming the workplace for people who stammer.\u00a0Iain\u00a0spoke about those early days\u00a0of working with a stammer by saying \u201cI felt so ashamed of my stammering\u00a0and now I\u2019ve\u00a0won an award for it.\u201d And from\u00a0Lifetime Achievement Award winner,\u00a0Lyn Lee,\u00a0about the importance\u00a0of staying on the journey:\u00a0\u201cDo not give up when times get tough&#8230;We don\u2019t always have the answers\u00a0but that doesn\u2019t stop us from greatness.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally,\u00a0I could not\u00a0write this blog without commenting on the smiles in the room. class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are living in&nbsp;challenging&nbsp;times,&nbsp;when talk around disability inclusion is not always positive.&nbsp;The awards were&nbsp;a great opportunity&nbsp;to remember why we all do what we do, why it&nbsp;continues to be important,&nbsp;and to celebrate the people who are making a real difference.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If
